X and Linux together, a popular option
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

Users are switching, but perhaps not the ones Apple is targeting with its latest ad
campaign
Previously, IGM reported that TerraSoft, purveyors of the popular Yellow Dog Linux
distribution for PPC computers is selling Macs with their flavor of Linux and OS X
preloaded. Now, News.com reports that QliTech, an Illinois-based Mac-reseller, has
joined the fray and is also offering new Macs with X and a buyer''s choice of various
flavors (SuSE, Mandrake, Debian or Gentoo) of Linux pre-installed.
"It''s just kind of one of those things that has been brewing," QliTech president Ray
Sanders told News.com.
Although shy about giving exact numbers, Sanders reportedly said that his company''s
experiment with selling dual-boot Macs is going well.
Nimble on every platform
Apple''s Titanium PowerBook G4s in particular have become commonplace in Linux shops
and at industry events because of their ability to run three OS'' simultaneously -- X
and Linux and Windoze using Connectix'' benchmark PC-emulation software.
With the advent of Jaguar compatibility in MOL (Mac-on-Linux which we reported on over
the weekend) the Mac''s legendary flexibility has gained a new dimension.
Hardware that is eminently reliable and doesn''t lose its value over night are two
other reasons *nix users and developers are moving to the platform. How long can
Windoze users resist such a powerful combination of value?
Analysis: The chewy goodness of X continues to draw new adherents. Perhaps Apple will
soon tell us all how many thousands, nay, millions of Windoze users have made the
switch in recent months? That''s unlikely. But, with the Unix and Linux communities
uniting behind X, the platform has never been healthier.
