Schiller: "OS X the best print publishing and design platform"

Marketing VP fires shot across WMP 9''s lack of "open standards".
At the Seybold Seminars keynote in San Francisco today, Apple VP of Worldwide
Marketing, Phil Schiller, scarcely touched on Apple hardware, according to eWeek''s
report.
Instead, Schiller spruiked Jaguar (OS X.2) as the benchmark OS for print, design and
web publishing. However, as eWeek notes, there was no mention of Quark''s OS X-native
version of XPress in the keynote. Schiller referred, as Jobs did at MWNY, to
"stragglers", but not by name.
Schiller included some important announcement: along with epanded third-party support
for Rendezvous hours earlier by his boss, Jobs, Schiller stated that Apple''s
GIMP-print package would be open sourced, along with CUPS 1.1, with a direct download
from Apple''s site.
The Marketing VP also recapped previous Jaguar announcements, touting Quartz Extreme,
better PDF support, Inkewell, color support, AppleScript and speed improvements.
Schiller also echoed the recent comments of some Apple executives who have recently
criticized Microsoft for its adoption of an "anti-standards" approach with its Windows
Media Player 9. Schiller argued that QuickTime 6''s media architecture was designed
around open standards. Quoted in eWeek, Schiller said, "When I buy a TV set I don''t
buy a set based on what channel I want to watch. And that''s not the way it should be
for digital media either."
Analysis: It''s important at this critical time that Apple is seen to be paying
attention to the publishing industry, with keynotes given by figures as senior as
Schiller. Remember, Seybold used to be a place where Apple released major hardware and
software (printers, scanners and the like).
As a side note, I think if we''re interviewing for Steve''s successor, I think we may
have just found him: his name''s Phil. He''s almost as good as Steve at taking sharp
(if not so witty) pot-shots at PCs, Windows and Microsoft in general. Perhaps he''s
prepping himself for the position (?).
