DVD Standards: Never The Twain Shall Meet

Sony attempts to bridge the DVD-R and DVD+RW gap, but PC manufacturers and MS push for
DVD+RW alone.
The rival DVD Forum and DVD-RW Alliance have squared off once again - and while
there''s blood on the floor, there''s no public sign of a truce between the two groups.
Apple, which falls into the DVD Forum camp, which supports the DVD-R, DVD-RW and
DVD-RAM formats, has actively supported drives in its Macs. Early Power Mac G4s
sported DVD-RAM drives, while more recent Power Macs, iMacs and now eMacs have DVD-R
drives (which also support DVD-RW). Apple allies incluide the major Japanese and
Korean firms Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp.
A ZDNet story covering the issue notes that Sony has attempted to bridge the gap
itself by announcing two new drives while will support reading/writing both the DVD-RW
and DVD+RW formats. However, DVD Video discs burned in either format are playable on
most home DVD players.
The DVD+RW corner includes Dell, HP and Microsoft, with the latter only committing
itself to supporting the +RW standard in Windows a few months ago. Sony has had a foot
in each camp, producing both DVD-RW and DVD+RW computers and other consumer
electronics devices. It is also a member of both DVD alliances.
The divisions between the two groups hinge largely upon licensing issues, which are
highly lucrative. However, the search for a common standard (like the compact disc)
has not been successful as each side claims technical superiority and benefits over
the other.
A Dell spokesperson quoted in the article cites the Microsoft decision to support
DVD+RW as critical, stating it was "only a matter of time" before the critical mass of
manufacturers supported the DVD+RW format.
