Sanyo Hots Up CD, DVD Burning
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
September 26th 2002

Would you believe 80x CD reading in the new format?

Two announcements from Sanyo puts two more CD and DVD recorders into the burner wars,
following recent Pioneer and Sony releases. But Sanyo's SuperComboDrive, which is a
DVD/CDRW recorder also incorporating the technology, is a more interesting piece of
news.

Sanyo has announced its HD-BURN technology which puts 1.4GB of data onto a standard
CD. According to a story at
CDRInfo,SuperCombo Drive (CRD-DV2), this recorder is a 4x DVD+R/+RW writer, and writes
CDs at 24x (10x for CDRW). Under HD-BURN format, the drive writes CDs at 36x and read
them at 80x. [Not a typo - ed].

Production is scheduled to commence January next year.

Analysis: Sony has tried the larger-capacity CD already, but it's proven a limited
market. We suspect the same will be the case for Sanyo's version. If reliability is
proven, 90-99 minute standard CDRs will probably be the next popular consumer storage
solution, at least in the short-to-medium term. But when DVD-R/RW and/or +R/+RW fall
markedly in price - as will occur shortly with 2x/1x recorders, it may sound the
death-knell for CDRWs, as DVD becomes the new, mainstream storage medium.
