MacRaffle shut down by Ohio's AG
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 1st 2002

Investigators from attorney general's office seized the computers used to run the
site, as well as documents

MacRaffle has been effectively shut down by the Ohio State Attorney General's office
with the seizure of the company's computers and documents. The site's operator, Corey
M. Ormsby, has not been detained or charged with any offense.

However, the state AG's office believes MacRaffle is running an illegal gambling
operation.

"They invited themselves inside and told me that I was not under arrest or being
charged with anything at this time and that they were simply going to discuss the site
with me," states Ormsby on the MacRaffle site. "After a while in our discussion they
informed me that they had a search warrant to search through the MacRaffle records and
that they were going to seize my computers and all of the MacRaffle documents. Due to
this seizure of property and the current investigation I made a call and had the site
closed until further notice."

"At this time no charges have been brought against myself or MacRaffle and I am
confident that after the Attorney Generals office investigates and has a chance to
examine the MacRaffle documents that they will see that the site was not in fact
gambling at all," he continued. "I hold no ill will towards the Attorney General's
office, they are in fact doing their job to protect the public from possible scams and
as inconvenient as that can be it is in everyone's best interest."

Ormsby claims that of the nearly $75,000 in registration fees taken in this year by
MacRaffle:

 Between $25,000 and $30,000 of that has been issued as prizes;
 Between $30,000 to $35,000 has been paid for development and hosting costs;
Between $6,000-$10,000 has been in advertising; and
Somewhere near $5,000 has been for computer equipment and misc. office fees.

He states on the website that because computers and documentation were seized he has
no way to list to the penny accurate figures in his own defense.

Lastly, MacRaffle is soliciting donations to help pay the legal expenses of this
adventure.

"I do not expect anyone to but if you would like to help me cover the legal expenses
that are being incurred you may give a contribution to me via PayPal," he asks
plaintively on the website.

Editor's note: At the very least, MacRaffle.com was operating at the very edge of what
is permissible under the law. At face value, Ormsby seems to be on the up-and-up, but
the decision as to the legality of the operation will probably end up in the sole
purview of a state judge.

Whatever the case, one of the more colorful sites that graced the Mac Internet
universe is at least for the moment no longer with us.
