DVD-R PowerBook G4 October Release Rumors Gain Pace

October or January for TiDVD-R?
The long-mooted and never spotted PowerBook G4 DVD-R rumor is hotting up the rumor
mills.
This week's Sony and Toshiba release of slimline portable DVD-R notebooks has added
fuel to the fire, but there are legitimate reasons for expecting a specification bump
for the TiBook.
First, it's around six months since the PowerBook got a speed bump. Six months is
around the time Apple schedules a refresh. About one minor/major software/hardware
release per month from Apple is about par for the course now.
Second, we do know that PowerBooks aren't selling particularly well, and that there
must be a fair few Ti shells sitting at the factory. Outfitting them with a DVD-R to
shift the remaining models (and maybe offering a retrofit program, as occurred with
the pre-Combo model, would also be within the realms of possibiiity). The overwhelming
likelihood is that Apple will move to a markedly different PowerBook design come MWSF.
There are factors militating against this kind of release of course. A DVD-R 'Book at
MWSF in January would make a bigger media splash, as would a 1Ghz CPU. But then again,
the last couple of major TiBook revs have not been released at an Apple show.
Jason O'Grady's PowerPage reported a (badly-translated) note from a Japanese Mac user
group on the production of a Matsushita slot-drive DVD-R, which seems to meet the
supply/release deadline [Matsushita make many of the past and present optical drives
for PowerBooks/iBooks]. 1GHz prototypes have supposed been seen running as well.
But don't let that stop you buying a PowerBook now, if you're contemplating a purchase.
