Apple Slashes $100 Off 15" Flat-Panel iMacs
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 7th 2002
Countdown to 17" iMacs across the board, with 19" wildcard a strong chance.
Apple has cut $100 from its three 15" LCD models at the AppleStore. The new prices
are:
- iMac 700/CDRW: $1,299
- iMac 700/Combo: $1,499
- iMac 800/SuperDrive: $1,699
The 17" iMac 800/SuperDrive remains at $1,999. The prices were first noted at the
AppleStore.Potential buyers can expect Mac vendors to be quick in matching the new
pricing, while adding additional RAM bundles and other incentives. However, the
SuperDrive iMac was still listed at around $1,799 at a number of vendors at time of
writing.
Analysis: As Ron Carlson reported on IGM last week, Apple is reported to have ceased
iMac 15" production, and may be clearing out inventory of 15" models to make way for a
range of 17" iMacs, with a top-of-the-line 19" flat panel a possibility. 15" LCDs are
simply regarded as too small now, as consumers find more and more cheap PCs with 17"
flat panels available. Moreover, there is no profit in 15" LCDs for manufacturers,
and hasn't been for some time. IGM's article last week suggested that October was a
possible shipping month, but that November was much more likely for logistical reasons.
