Component Demand Will Lead to DVD-RW, DVD+RW Shortage This Quarter
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 8th 2002
Pioneer, Ricoh caught short as consumer demand for DVD burners escalates.
MacUser UKAnalysis: Apple appear to have a deep inventory of 15" DVD-R iMacs for the
time being at least. While some are advising Power Mac purchasers option out the DVD-R
and wait for OEM versions of Pioneer's 'SuperDrive II', with 4x and 2x write speeds,
you may be in for a long wait if production of the new-generation DVD-Rs isn't ramped
up sufficiently to cope with demand. But the popularity of DVD-R and +RW, with a
larger number of manufacturers moving into the field, means prices will be fiercely
competitive as DVD-R and +RW really take off in 2003. Toshiba, for example, sees DVD
burners replacing CDRWs in the near future for both audio and video. Watch this space.
