Apple posts modem update for X
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

A solution for 'rare issue' that affects numerous Mac models is now available
Apple has posted an updater, the Mac OS X Modem Updater, that corrects a problem that
the related Knowledge Base article calls a rare issue. However, the problem apparently
affects nearly three dozen Mac models.
If you've seen this message:
Internet Connect could not open the communications device
Then, rest assured, the Mac you're using is indeed affected.
Another way to check for the problem is to open the Internet Connection Log. If you
see "Failed to open/dev/cu.modem: Device busy," then your Mac is affected and you
should download and install the update.
Software Update?
Apparently, this fix is only available for download and not using Software Update.
Apple states that "If you have not experienced the symptoms, you do not need to
download the Mac OS X Modem Update."
Naturally, as a wide range of models are listed as affected and yet Apple refers to
the problem as a "rare issue," we'd like you to post a comment if indeed your Mac has
been affected and whether or not the updater actually remedies the problem.
The Mac OS X Modem Updater can be downloaded here.
