QT Showcase: Gov't news with an e-brogue
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 9th 2002
A (virtual) cat-loving babe with penchant for U2 delivers the official line for
Scotland
Wired has a report on a Scottish government initiative that delivers the new via the
web with a twist. The delivery is given by Seonaid (pronounced "Shona" and stands for
Scottish Executive online news and information distributor) -- a virtual 28-year-old
that loves cats and U2.
Seonaid's creators claim she is the world's first real-time virtual character to star
on a government website. That's an interesting claim to fame.
However, since her introduction, the Scottish government site has seen page
impressions spike by 63 percent, as well as a 60 percent increase in unique users.
A captivating story on census data analysis (low birth rates) can be found here.
Editor's note: The QT version of the clip is rather poor quality likely because
there's only one choice -- 56K modem -- regardless of which bandwidth radio button you
select. The WMP version, as is this "technology's wont," stopped after a few seconds
and refused to play at all even with successive reloads. The RealOne encoded clip
played well, and on the whole looked and sounded good too. I wonder how a 300K QT clip
would compare?
