M$ posts 30-day Office X demo
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 10th 2002

Redmond continues to boost its sales efforts

M$ has posted a downloaded, 30-day demo of its industry-leading Office X suite of
productivity tools for Mac. The bin-hexed version weighs in at 122MB and is available
here

In related news, News.com reports that M$ is set to announce a Mac-specific
advertising campaign.

The ads, which play up the ability of Macs and PCs to get along, will begin showing up
Saturday in magazines geared at Mac, business, technology and design audiences,
according to an e-mail from a Microsoft representative quoted by News.com.

Apparently, the ads will feature computer characters. In one of the still unseen
commercial missives, News.com says a Mac and a PC play chess by the pool, while
another shows a Mac and PC eating Chinese take-out while watching a late-night movie.

"Macs and PCs have never been so compatible," read the ads' headlines. The ads
encourage Mac users to go to a new Web site, www.officeformac.com to download a 30-day
free trial of Office. This link is already active.

The link actually takes one to a page on M$' existing Mactopia site (i.e.
microsoft.com/mac), but the fact Redmond, or at least its Mac Business Unit, is
promoting a Mac-specific URL speaks volumes about the company's new commitment to
platform.

Editorial note: If this rumor is indeed true, as seems likely as the link mentioned in
the News.com piece is active, it marks a turning point in the relationship between
Cupertino and Redmond. The companies have turned the negative press and sniping of
July into a concerted effort to sell their respective products.
