OWC burnishes 2.5" drive line
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 16th 2002
The vendors has added a USB 2.0/FireWire version of its popular Mercury On-The-Go
solutions
OWC has introduced a new line of Mercury On-The-Go portable storage solutions. The
line now features USB 2.0 and FireWire ports for the ultimate in cross-platform
compatibility.
Weighing less than 12 ounces and measuring only 3.0 x 5.5 x 1.0 inches, these
bus-powered drives have shock resistant enclosures and feature a cool blue activity
indicator light, near silent drive operation, a large 2MB or 8MB data buffer, two
FireWire ports or a single USB port. Prices start at $190 for a 20GB/4200 rpm drive
and $220 for a 20GB/5400 rpm version.
Add a little fire to life
If you own an older Mac that doesn't have FireWire or USB ports, OWC makes it easy to
add FireWire to your PCI PowerMac or PowerBook G3. FireWire PCI cards start from
$24.97, FireWire PCMCIA for PowerBooks start from $29.97!.
Editor's note: These enclosures are made here in Taiwan and I've tested both the 2.5
and 3.5 inch enclosures, and can vouch for the performance figures OWC has posted. I'm
currently using a Mercury Elite Pro as my primary portable drive and almost every
consulting trip to a customer results in the sale of one these attractive units.
People love the little blue power light...
