Apple Delivers DVD-R iMac Firmware Upgrade
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 23rd 2002

Fix addresses use of 2x/4x media in Pioneer drives used in iMacs.

Apple has made a firmware revision available today for the iMac DVD-R drive.
Currently, the firmware is only being released via Software Update.

Revision 1.0 incorporates support for 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW media which Pioneer
recently issued a warning about when using its 2x/1x DVD-R drives. The Pioneer drives
are marketed as 'SuperDrives' in a range of Macs.

Previously, Pioneer had released a Windows-only firmware revision to address the
problem.

Note: This release does not support third-party Pioneer drives used either as IDE
drives on a Power Mac, or in a FireWire external case. Use at your own risk - it may
be safer for non-Apple-labelled drives to be flashed with a Windows machine.
