October notebook LCD prices dive

Declining demand has caused display prices to fall for the third month straight
Digitimes that the global notebook and LCD monitor market downturn has caused LCD
contract prices to decline sharply in October -- the third month in a row. The digital
daily quotes Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun figures that predicts pressure from PC vendors for
price cuts will continue and it's unlikely prices will stabilize before the year's end.
Falling prices:
� 15-inch models -- Aug $290-300, Sept 275-285, Oct 230-240
� 14.1-inch models -- Aug 232.50-242.50, Sept 220-230, Oct 200-210
Apple representatives stated that falling component prices helped to bolster the
company's bottom line during its Q4. Without these declines the $45 million loss,
largely attributable to one-time charges, would have been larger still.
Editor's note: It's unlikely we'll benefit from these lower prices, which likely will
head even lower before year's end. Although Apple is faced with declining unit volumes
and market share, it's desire to remain one of the only two profitable computer
companies will probably win out over any desire to actually press its ease-of-use and
cool-factor advantages with lower prices. Sad...
