Dr Mac: Classic is just a bad memory
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 18th 2002

Burn, rip, mix, surf, change system settings, upload, download, install and much more
without a care under X

Bob Levitus, aka Dr Mac, has dedicated this week's Houston Chronicle column to the
"restart-free" joys of Cupertino's BSD-based OS. From installing and using new apps to
mundanely running 20 apps at the same, this long-time Mac pundit and columnist
appreciates the thoughtless -- at least as far as the user is concerned -- ease and
power of X.

"Today I do more with my Mac than I ever did using OS 9, and I do it in less time, and
with less stress," enthuses Levitus.

Like the rest of us who've made the switch, Dr Mac revels in the ability to rejig
system settings, which required a restart under OS 9 for many operations, under OS X.
Moreover, he speaks glowingly of running 20 or more apps while performing multiple
networked tasks.

"OS X saves me at least three or four hours a week," states the good doctor. "I rarely
restart. And I rarely wait for programs to launch -- the ones I use frequently are
already open."

Although X lacks some of the polish of OS 9, it's definitely a time saver. Not having
to restart one or more times a day. Moreover, like Levitus, I greatly appreciate
performing multiple tasks, especially those requiring extensive network or processor
resources, without slowing down let alone crashing.

His final line really sums up the value X brings to the table, "You couldn't pay me
enough to go back to OS 9 now."

Well said, Bob.
