Add IrDA to your iBook/PowerBook G4
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
October 24th 2002

Accessorize your 'Book

Taken a walk around the back of your fresh, new PowerBook G4 lately? Missing something?

That'd be the IrDA port, right?

Apple killed the IrDA port (probably because BlueTooth is here, sorta) with the latest
Titanium PB refresh. But that doesn't mean you have to walk around infrared-less.

Higoto, the distributer of cool PowerBook/iBook accessories like RoadTools' Coolpad,
has a USB-based IrDA module which lets any iBook or PowerBook (or Mac desktop with
USB, for the matter), use the 4Mbps IrDA protocol to hook up to your cell phone or
hot-sync your Palm-compatible. Important if you shelled out for a cell phone with IrDA
capabilities.

While almost all post-5300 PowerBooks support have IR ports, only the 2400/3400 and
later support the IrDA protocol. Apple retained the IrDA protocol.

At the very least, you can just flash files over to your other PowerBook when you've
got no ethernet cable.

You can check out Higoto's other iBook , iPod and PowerBook products here.
