iPod: Happy (belated) Birthday to you
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 24th 2002
The slight, light king of mp3 players turned one yesterday
It was one year ago today that Apple foisted its iPod mp3 player on an unsuspecting
world. At the time, many pundits doubted the device would find any buyers outside
Apple's hard core devotees.
However, within its first six weeks, 125,000 of the handsome and remarkably friendly
portable mp3 player cum personal organizer cum portable hard disk flew off the shelves.
At the event announcing the device Apple ber man Steven P Jobs said, "With iPod,
Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your
entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go. With iPod,
listening to music will never be the same again."
Typically immodest, but in the case of the iPod, dead on.
Equally immodest sales
According to Macworld UK, the iPod accounted for 42 percent of all mp3 player sales in
Japan. Moreover, Apple recently announced that sales of their industry-leading
portable audio device flew off retailer's shelves at the rate of over 140,000 units
last quarter and the just introduced Windoze version accounted for about one-third of
that total.
With Windoze-compatible models available and the sales channel broadened to include
high-street reseller Best Buy, the good news for Apple's bottom line looks to continue
unabated for some time to come. Once again, iPod, happy birthday (and many happy
returns)!
