Freenet: A bulwark for free speech online
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
October 30th 2002

Peer-to-peer networking gets a boost via this decentralized, free-wheeling by design
app

Freenet.org has issued a "major release" (v0.5.0.3) of the same-named Freenet
peer-to-peer Internet sharing software. This free application is designed to ensure
true freedom of communication over the Internet and allows "anybody" to publish and
read information with complete anonymity.

According to the group's website, "Nobody controls Freenet, not even its creators,
meaning that the system is not vulnerable to manipulation or shutdown."

One of the most innovative features of Freenet is its ability to adaptively replicate
content in response to demand.

Editor's note: In order to use Freenet, you'll need to be familiar in using with the
Terminal app that's part of OS X.
