Inexpensive Pismo/Lombard CDRW Upgrade

Cheap way to get a burner into your PowerBook G3.
An xlr8yourmac reader, Scott L., has posted a http://sjaz.net/pismo/ pictorial guide
to upgrading your Pismo/Lombard DVD-ROM to a Sony CRX-700e. The total cost of the
operation was less than $80.
The 700e is an 8x4x24 CD burner which, like the Matsushita UJDA-330 (CDRW) and 770
(Combo) often found as bare drives on ebay, fits directly into the Pismo/Lombard caddy
with only slight modifications to the tray bezel.
The drive is recognized by Apple System Profiler, and works with Disc Burner and
iTunes. The drive is also bootable.
Although Scott did the modification on his Pismo, there's no reason why a Lombard
couldn't be used for the upgrade. The two PowerBooks share the same form factor and
same optical drive caddy, regardless of whether the Lombard sports a CD or DVD-ROM
drive.
Commercial solutions can cost upwards of $150. The only downside to this mod is that
you sacrifice your DVD-ROM drive, unless you can find a spare caddy with a broken
drive.
