Apple UK Ends Double Your RAM Offer: US to Follow?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 3rd 2002

Cheap RAM promo ends prematurely. Apple offers no explanation.

MacWorld UK are reporting that Apple UK have ended their 'double your RAM' offer more
than a month earlier than advertised.

In the UK, this offer cost 28.20 on any new Mac model. In the US, the price is $40.
The offer is exclusive to the AppleStore. MacWorld UK state that Apple has not
provided any explanation regarding the cessation of the promotion as yet, but the
company has reduced RAM prices somewhat, although at much higher prices than those
offered by the promotion. For example, it now costs almost 10 times the promotional
amount to double a PowerBook G4/1GHz's RAM from 512MB to 1GB.

Analysis: According to recent reports in Digitimes, RAM manufacturers are not having
an easy time selling memory. However, firms may be limiting shipments in order to
boost prices, which may be one possible explanation for short-term increases in RAM
prices.

There is no legal onus upon Apple to continue this promotion until January, so if
you're thinking of a new Mac purchase, this may be the time to do it. While
third-party RAM can be bought much more cheaply than from Apple, we don't know
anywhere you can get 512MB of RAM for $40.
