Resellers nixing eMac sales
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 5th 2002

High failure rates, up to 30% of units sold, are causing some vendors to stop carrying
the consumer/ed machines

MacFixIt reports (Friday edition) that several resellers have stopped selling the eMac
due to exceptionally high product failure rates. Specifically, the "raster shift"
display issue -- a known problem with the desktop -- accounts for most of the problems.

"Another fairly large Macintosh reseller has chimed in on the previously reported eMac
"raster shift" display issue, taking the additional step of ceasing sale of the
consumer/education all-in-one units because service costs are too high, and customer
relationships are being ruined by product failure rates," states the report.

One reseller is quoted as saying, "On the inside, in my opinion, the design and
workmanship are obviously poor on the PAV - which is a 'one piece' unit with the power
supply, video board and monitor all in one. Heavy, bulky, awkward, and generally a
pain to replace."

According to MacFixIt, the "raster shift" problem causes the bottom third or half of
the screen to go black, with the rest of image shifting upward and out of the top
boundary of the display. Serious static also accompanies the problem, rendering the
viewable part of the screen virtually useless.

Repair parts available to resellers apparently are as prone to failure with one
stating that of four of the 11 systems he repaired failing again for the same reason.

Editor's note: Any of you out there in reality experiencing this or similar problems
with new eMacs?
