Rumor: Major Developers Wont Get 10.3 Developer Builds Until After MWSF
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 9th 2002

Panther to gain shape - in January.

Think Secret reports that Apple's next major upgrade to OS X, version 10.3, codenamed
'Panther' will not be seeded to developers until after MacWorld in January.

According to the report, Apple has informed its major developers that pre-release
builds would not pre-date the January expo. As ThinkSecret notes, a complete build of
Jaguar was demonstrated at May 2002's World-wide Developers' Conference, and the OS
upgrade shipped by August.

The story also reports that Panther represents a change in code names; 10.3 was
previously thought to be 'Pinot'. OS 10.4 is allegedly called 'Merlot' at present.

Analysis: How seriously will this delay critical apps for OS X? Is Quark developing
XPress 6.0, for instance, for Jaguar or Panther? (early versions of Quark 3.x, for
instance, broke under later versions of OS 8, leaving users with no option but a full
upgrade).OS upgrades deliver significant benefits for users, but there's often a delay
while we wair for updated apps, drivers for printers, scanners. Some CardBus FireWire
cards broke under Jaguar, for example. But if you think major developers have a hard
time, maybe spare a thought for the shareware develper, who doesn't get all the
advantages (technical assistance etc.) that the Adobes and MacBUs of this world do -
much less early access to builds.
