Macpower first to unveil 1394B bridgeboard
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 22nd 2002

Newly available FireWire2 components kick peripheral development into high gear

Macpower has announced a new range of 1394B bridgeboards that can deliver data
transfer rates of up to 800Mbps. The speed breakthrough has been made possible by the
using the new 1394B IDE to FireWire bridge chip (chipmaker's identity withheld,
product still under NDA). Macpower has completed the engineering and design, and is
the first company in the world to unveil a "production format" 1394B bridge board
solution.

Macpower's next generation of 1394B mass storage bridge solution is scheduled to be
incorporated into their award winning and stylish line of IceCube FireWire enclosures
for delivery beginning February 2003.

The new Macpower 1394B bridge marks the next milestone in high-bandwidth, high-speed
data transfer for external drives. It combines an 800Mbps FireWire 2.0 (1394B) Link
layer and Phy controller with a 480Mbps USB2.0 Phy in a programmable device that
results in a fully integrated solution for high-speed data streaming.

Mr Nic East, Director of MAG Gmbh, Macpower's leading distribution partner in Europe,
commented, "This new 1394B solution builds upon Macpower's established and successful
1394a FireWire enclosure product range -- we're delighted with Macpower's proven
innovation which will continue to ensure their technology leadership."

"Macpower's world-beating development of a 1394B bridge board solution will allow us
to be first in the US market to offer 1394B enclosures to FireWire users." said Alex
Chen, Managing Director of Century Global, Inc, Macpower's USA distribution partner.

Editor's note: A number of rumor sites say we shouldn't expect revised PowerMacs,
which are expected to include FireWire2, at Macworld San Francisco. However, many of
these same sites also say updated pro desktops could arrive in February, which
coincides well with the expected availability of FireWire2 peripherals from MacPower
and others.
