Major iApps consolidate into iLife suite, retail for $49
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
January 7th 2003
Apple announces iLife suite which includes iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto and iTunes.
Apple announced Tuesday iLife, a suite of its major iApps, iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto and
iTunes. The company announced that it will sell iLife for $49. The price tag covers
iDVD, the only of the iApps currently not available for download. Apple stated that
iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto will continue to be available for free via download, but
will also be bundled with iLife. Also, Apple stated that it will bundle all iLife
applications for free with new computers.
"iLife does for our digital lifestyle what Microsoft Office did for office
productivity -- all the applications you need are in one box, and they all work
together," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Apple is far ahead of its PC competitors in
offering the best-in-class applications for digital music, photography, moviemaking
and DVD creation, and now they all work together seamlessly."
iLife includes new versions of iPhoto 2, iMovie 3 and iDVD 3. From Apple:
iPhoto 2 now includes one-click photo Enhance, which can dramatically improve
less-than-perfect pictures; a new Retouch tool for removing scratches, hair, lens
dirt, etc.; photo archiving to a CD or DVD to preserve and share your iPhoto library;
and the ability to email photos with one click using Mac OS X Mail, Eudora, Entourage
and AOL.
iMovie 3 features pro-quality special effects, including the new "Ken Burns" effect
for adding emotionally powerful motion to still photos; powerful new audio editing
tools and blockbuster sound effects from Skywalker Sound's seven-time Academy Award
winner Gary Rydstrom; pro-quality special video effects such as Aged Film, Letterbox
and Earthquake; and the ability to add chapter markers to movies for DVD navigation
and scene selection.
iDVD 3 includes 24 new pro-quality, Apple-designed, customizable DVD menu themes;
automatically created DVD scene selection menus from iMovie chapter markers; and the
ability to personalize iDVD 3 themes with personal photos, music and movies using iDVD
Drop Zones.
iLife and free downloads of iPhoto 2 and iMovie 3 will be available January 25. The
iLife CD can be purchased at Apple retail locations and Web sites. Apple is also
offering a Up-to-Date program for customers who purchase a new Mac with a SuperDrive
after January 7 that does not include iLife. The upgrade is available for $19.95.
Analysis:
All the rumor hubbub turned out to be for not. The rumors were part true in that a
bundled suite of iApps was on the way with a price tag, but nothing really changes.
iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto continue to be available for free, and iDVD continues to be
not. Apple's rationalization is that iDVD is too big to download, and the 2.0 update
in fact shipped on a DVD. While this is true, I don't think anyone can argue that it
doesn't cost $49 to box up a DVD, so Apple is getting something.
The interesting part is not whether Apple deserves some cash for developing its iApps,
which is not unreasonable, but the interesting spin placed on the iDVD upgrade/iLife
price tag. At the keynote, Steve Jobs tip toed around these details, perhaps
indicating that Apple is catching on to customer's complaints of feeling gouged for
seemingly endless fees.
