OWC, Giga Designs: Get a G4 upgrade for $300

An upstart has partnered with the most-respected upgrade reseller, shakes up market
Other World Computing (OWC, an IGM advertiser) has announced that it has entered into
a distribution agreement with Giga Designs to sell its G-celerator family of PowerMac
G4 CPU upgrades. Giga Designs is the first company with an AGP G4 upgrade product
priced at $300.
"The Giga Design G-celerators are an excellent addition to our existing lineup of G4
AGP upgrades from PowerLogix and Sonnet," said Larry O'Connor, president and chief
executive officer of OWC. "The line is top notch, with an excellent
price-to-performance ratio, with the G-celerator G4/800MHz being the first upgrade of
this type priced at under $300."
Available in three different models, G-celerators are single processor CPU modules
designed to address the demanding processing requirements of Apple's latest OS.
Powered by G4 processors (Moto), G-celerator CPU upgrades offer user-selectable bus
speeds, are compatible with most PowerMac G4 models, are easy to install and carry a
three-year warranty.
The G-celerator GC5-1000-D2 features a 1.0GHz G4 processor, 64KB L1 cache, 256KB L2
cache and 2MB of DDR RAM. The G-celerator GC5-1000 also features a 1.0GHz G4
processor, 64KB of L1 cache, and 256KB of L2 cache, but does not include any DDR RAM.
The G-celerator GC1-800 features an 800MHz G4 processor, 64KB of L1 cache and 256KB of
L2 cache. G-celerators require Classic 9.2.1, 9.2.2 or X.
G-celerator CPU upgrades are compatible with any AGP-equipped PowerMac made prior to
August 2002. This includes the AGP Graphics (Sawtooth), Server, Gigabit Ethernet,
Digital Audio, Quick Silver and Quick Silver 2002 G4s.
Introductory pricing for G-celerator CPU upgrades range from $299 to $559, and these
products are available for purchase during Macworld Expo 2003 at the Moscone Center at
the OWC booth (#2323) or online.
Editor's note: An 800MHz G4 for for $300 looks pretty tasty to me. Also, you can pick
up a 100MHz G4 system for under $700 online (try MacofAll Trades (an IGM advertiser)
and yields a total price of well under $1,000 for an 800MHz G4. Add an ATI AGP card
and you'll be cooking with gas!
