MCE Announces DVD-R Retrofit for 667, 800MHz PowerBook G4s

Forthcoming MCE products include slot-loading Lombard/Pismo Combo drives, portable
DVD-R.
MCE have not made an official announcement, but their web site shows the slot-loading
SuperDrive - available only on the current PowerBook G4s - for retrofitting into older
G4 667 and 800MHz models.
The drive is priced at $449, according to MCE's website. Apple prices the DVD-R at
$200 for the 12.1" PowerBook G4, but it is not available as an accessory [although
obviously it is available to Apple Certified techs as a service part, which begs the
question of a grey market - Ed.]. No further information is available, although the
DVD-R upgrade will be arriving February 25.
Staying with MCE, they have also revealed a slot-loading Combo drive (CDRW/DVD) for
the PowerBook G3 Firewire (Pismo) and Bronze (Lombard). While MCE have offered a
tray-load Combo drive for some time now, this is a new spin. Again, specifications are
not available, and neither is the price, but you can assume it is simply a
slot-loading version of the venerable expansion-bay drive. For owner/drivers of
Lombards and Pismos (and there are many - I'm still one), this will be the media bay
accessory de rigeur for the year.
If a portable Superdrive is your speed, MCE also have a DVD-R/RW/CDRW drive, the Lucid
SD for $399, arriving February 10. Clearly, MCE have taken some styling cues form the
newly-released aluminium PowerBook G4s, Again, no details, but it may be a Pioneer
AO-4 rather than the faster AO-5 drives (4x), given that it's a portable.
Analysis: We guess that if you're a PowerBook 667/800 owner, all you need to do now is
buy the iLife suite to get iDVD. We can't fathom any reason why an internal
slot-loader (presumably OEM) in the superseded PowerBooks wouldn't just work instantly
with iDVD.
