Rumor: Disk Warrior 3.0 Coming to X Soon
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
January 21st 2003
Leading Macintosh disk utility set to go OS X native.
Macbidouille is reporting that sources suggest Alsoft is prepping Disk Warrior 3.0
for release shortly. Currently, Disk Warrior 2.1.1, which can boot and repair OS X and
OS 9 volumes, must be booted from OS 9, or earlier verions of the Mac OS.
As only some education and pro customers will receive Macs which can boot from OS 9
starting this month, the need for Alsoft to produce an OS X-native version of ther
disk utility is pressing.
Alsoft currently provide a boot CD for recent models, including the iMac (17" Flat
Panel), Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), PowerBook G4 (1GHz/867 MHz), and iBook
(32 VRAM, 14.1 LCD 32 VRAM, and Opaque 16 VRAM).
Unlike its rival, Norton Utilities for Macintosh, Disk Warrior repairs directory
damage. It also supports Macs running CPUs of 68020 vintage running System 7.1.
Disk Warrior is available from the Apple Store online, and Aple Retail Stores.
Analysis: Alsoft needs an OS X version, and it will be particularly useful for users
booting off different X partitions. The bottom line is to arm yourself with as many
disk tools as possible. I've run into only one FireWire drive which DW couldn't fix
(had to resort to Norton's Open Volume Recover for that one). But if it saves your
data once, it's worth the entry price.
