Digitimes: CDR Prices Will Rise in March

Start stocking up on those CDR spindles now.
Major blank CD manufacturer Ritek has warned that prices of CD blanks will rise
appreciably in March, according to a report at Digitimes.
The CEO of Ritek qualified this statement, saying that price rises would depend
largely upon CDR demand. CMC Magnetics is one company which may raise blank CDR prices
to $US0.20 per unit.
Digitimes' report notes that Ritek has been switching production over to DVD-R and +R
media. Despite CDR's dominance as a storage medium, margins are wafer thin due to
market saturation and low prices. More profitable DVD recordable media is where most
manifacturers are now turning their attention..
Analysis: An interesting point that comes out of this story is that Ritek has a 20%
share of the "larger" DVD-R market, and 79% of +R. Although DVD+RW recorders overtook
DVD-R/RW recorders in market share recently, the implication here is that the DVD-R
media markert is still larger than that of the +R rival format.
