QuarkXPress 6.0 Coming Soon?
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
February 18th 2003

Promotion offers XPress 5.0 users a free upgrade to 6.0.

MacFixit is not generally known as a rumor site, so it was interesting that they noted
Quark's recent PR in a letter to customers, giving them the opportunity to receive a
free upgrade to XPress 6.0 if they buy version 5.0

Here's an extract from the promo quoted by MacFixit:

""For a limited time, upgrade to QuarkXPress 5.0 and receive an upgrade to the
upcoming release of QuarkXPress 6.0 at no additional charge. Enjoy the new features
and expanded functionality of QuarkXPress 5.0 immediately; then, when QuarkXPress 6.0
is released, you'll receive an upgrade to the world's most popular design and layout
software on Mac OS X and Windows XP - free!

"Millions of users worldwide rely on QuarkXPress to dramatically boost productivity,
save time, and lower costs. QuarkXPress 6.0 extends these benefits to users of the Mac
OS X and Windows XP platforms with powerful new features, including an intriguing new
way to manage complex projects.

"Visit www.quark.com during the coming weeks to learn more about the new features of
QuarkXPress 6.0 and how they can make your job easier."

Quark has delayed its OS X version of XPress for some time, and some bad blood appears
to have developed between Quark Inc. and Apple over the issue. A Quark boss in 2001
said publicly he was not a Mac fan; Quark quickly issued a retraction of the
statement. Jobs, in his MWSF '03 keynote in January made a thinly-veiled reference to
Quark as an OS X "laggard'; Marketing VP Phil Schiller was more explicit. Apple and
Adobe have also cooperated to produce InDesign promos. A reported 10% of Quark users
have switched to InDesign, due primarily to its OS 9/X compatibility. However,
relatively few service bureaus are accepting InDesign files at this point.

Analysis: It sounds from the Quark promo that the feature set is finalized - that
rumor's been doing the rounds for some weeks now. So what users can expect is a
'carbon' (in both senses of the word( of XPress 5.0, rather than any truly new
features. 6.0 sounds like a dot-point upgrade of 5.0, although Quark's PR does note an
"intriguing new way to manage complex projects" will be incorporated into 6.0.
Clearly, however, the promo is also a way of bribing 'temporary' InDesign switchers to
come back to Quark.
