After yesterdays experiments I convinced myself that the
Airport Extreme Base Station was the source of all my
problems.

Google showed that an number of persons had trouble with
the 7.5.2 firmware.

I decided to backdown to version 7.4.2 of the firmware.

After the firmware loaded and I checked the configuration
I powered down and restarted the router.

After it came up I *still* could not connect to the VPN.

I decided to to a hard reset of the rascal, much to my
regret.

The router refused to come up and I could not do anything
about it. Any attempt to check the configuration lead
to a hang while the configuration was trying be be read.

I unplugged the rascal and when up to the attic and got
my old Linksys Wireless 54G router.

After a bit of struggle I got back on line but the linksys
would not allow connection to the VPN...

I realized I would have to modify my IP change motifier
so I dug out a old perl program and modified it for
the newer linksys router, enclosed here for your amusement:

#!/usr/bin/perl
#
# fetch the current ip address from the linksys router...
#  Jerry LeVan ([email protected])
#  Mac OS X 10.1.4
#  May 12,2002
#
# Modified for Linksys Wireless 54G
#   Jan 12, 2011

my ($pattern,$thePage,$theAddress,$wan,$ip,$theip);

#define the pattern we are looking for...
$theip = '(\d+\.\d+\.\d+\.\d+)';

# Fetch the page but cut it down to one line
$thePage =`curl -s  -u :<adminpassword> http://192.168.1.1/Status_Router.asp |
grep -A 1 "IP Address": | tail -1` ;

# Look for the current IP embedded in the Status Page

if ($thePage =~ m|$theip|)
 {
    $theAddress =  $1;
    print $theAddress,"\n";
    # here you could mail the address ...
 }
else
{
  print "Problem getting address...\n";
}
*********************************
Before I could finish the project, I had to stop and fix my
wife some supper...

{ time passes }

I came back and started hammering on the router...

I reloaded the newest firmware several times and still could not
get a configuration window.

I remembered I had a saved config file and was able to load it and
that seemed to make the router happy.

I was able to go in and reenter all of the data by hand and
when I restarted I got a shiny green light.

I grabbed the iPad and this time I was able to connect to
the VPN over 3G :) , ditto for the iPhone...

All is good until the router has another memory failure.

Whew,
