You can never be too paranoid when it comes to network security.

Run a packet sniffer for a day while your computers are busy doing "nothing". 
You'll be surprised just how much noise your machines generate while each app 
checks for updates, various communication programs poll statuses, Google 
harvests the content of your hard drive, and your hardware IP radio reports the 
visible file shares, their MAC addresses and list of files enclosed within back 
to the MPAA.
