It has nothing to do with RAID 5 at all. People should know that all drives are 
at risk of silent data corruption. Not just RAID 5.

Here is one of the most definitive research papers on the subject to date:

"Silent data corruptions could lead to data loss more often than latent sector 
errors, since, unlike latent sector errors, they cannot be detected or repaired 
by the disk drive itself. Detecting and recovering from data corruption 
requires protection techniques beyond those provided by the disk drive. In 
fact, basic protection schemes such as RAID [13] may also be unable to detect 
these problems."
