It says yes or no depending on the kernel you're using.

Oh, and if you don't want to fuss with plist files, you can simply issue this 
command:
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

And to go back, change the architecture to i386. You could also use a simple 
(and quite mac-like) method: hold down the 6 and the 4 on your keyboard during 
startup (3 & 2 for the reverse), but that's only for the one time.

Unfortunately I haven't used VirtualBox, so I can't help you with that.
