The story I"ve heard is that Apple have dropped Samba due to GPL3 licensing issues. Thus they are picking up a less mature technology stack, which is going to have problems for a while until Apple sort things out. This doesn't help your current situation any more than the previous advice of "install Samba yourself" but hopefully it helps explain why the problem exists. Alex
