After I moved the main.cf~orig and main.cf.default and still was failing, 
I went off in a corner and sucked my thumb for a while.

I eventually realized that postfix was probably still using my old main.cf.

Looking at the other main.* files I noticed that there was a 
use_sacl_cache = yes line.

I tacked on the line:
  use_sacl_cache = no
 into my old main.cf and reloaded postfix.

This 'fixed' the problem and I can now send mail to this machine from other
machines on my lan.

Hi ho, time to visit the other macs with vi in hand :)
