How about that:

sudo gpt -r show disk0

So there is a gpt specific command already included. However the GUIDs 
displayed by show are partition type GUIDs, not unique partition GUIDs.

It is also possible add/remove individual partitions with this command, but you 
need to be booted from another disk to do that. It won't let you make live 
modifications to the GPT, which I'm pretty sure gdisk will.
