I used NFS mounts for a time back around 10.4 and once I downloaded NSF mount,
I think it as, it was perfect.

NSF in general causes a lot of heartburn, but having a clear tool that just
worked was great.

I still used NSF in 10.6, though there I used Disk Utility's interface which
was a bit more squirrely, but still worked. However, the NSF drive I was trying
to use was simply too slow and while looking for a solution 10.7 came along. I
ended up sticking those drives into a usb2 case and dubling my performance,
though losing the NAS.

On the other hand, I tried to get my FreeBSD box to talk to an NSF mount on a
NAS reliably and finally gave up. On OS X I may have needed a third party tool,
or a squirrely Apple supplied UI, but then it worked as it was supposed to.

Up until Lion afp and smb where always the easiest to setup and the most
reliable, even if smb is dog-slow. Lion has screwed up smb severely, though it
appears to be working right now.

Of course, other things have changed. Most of my video streaming now goes over
DLNA or AirPlay or Air Video, and that was 90% of my networking needs and 100%
of my non-Mac needs.

Obviously, I've on ever been in a Xsan sort of setup, so this is all from
consumer level perspective.
