Related to the thread on transcoding video - is it possible to
transcode the MP2 (or MP4) data in whatever container format EyeTV
uses *directly* into DVD ready VOB files - preferably using with some
kind of custom file-system that would construct the DVD file
structure (and VOB files) "on the fly" so Toast wouldn't have to burn
up the HDD (and time) transcoding the same MP2 data into VOB
container files? It would also be nice if such a tool could do this
AND respect the in/out cut points you can set in EyeTV, also without
compacting the file in EyeTV (just skip a number of blocks in the
existing file when you hit an out-point..)
Does software like this even exist? I am NOT an expert on container
formats by ANY means, so could not write such a thing myself - much
less an "online virtual file system" to do such construction of a UDF
volume on the fly.
I've been wondering why Roxio doesn't add something like this for
the past two version of Toast (and Roxio and Elgato know it too if
these requests ever get to the engineers) - to no avail. Since Toast
and EyeTV are quite well integrated, this seems natural. It would
save a lot of time for people who record with EyeTV and then drop it
directly to DVD.. Or at LEAST implement "direct" excision of the in/
out points in Toast without the compacting phase in EyeTV being needed.
Although, I suppose if you're really going to do this - you probably
just get a really fast Mac Pro with enough memory (and a RAM disk)
that the transcode time doesn't matter, or a 30 inch display and
watch them there..
