I miss the "setting" or method that OS 9 used where there could not be more than one instance of an open folder... I frequently find after a long day that I'll have 3,4, 8 instances of commonly referenced folders open.

I have to admit, that I can't answer that question.
But fact is, that ever since OSX exists, it's window handling with the help of this ".DS_Store" files is a major annoyance. There are people (like me, for example) who do not need the tool- and sidebars, but orderly arranged windows. And it became even worse in Snow Leopard. I sometimes get the feeling of beeing paternalised by Apple, which seems to know better than me how I have to look to Finder windows....
