I have not seen this on the two PPC machines I maintain that run Leopard (one
G4, one G5).
You didn't mention that you tried any troubleshooting steps, but the first
things I would try in that situation are running some disk maintenance (repair
permissions, repair disk/Diskwarrior) and then reinstalling the Combo updater
for 10.5.8.
