There is a free, and open source, app that does nearly the same thing,
called Menu Meters. Runs fine on 10.6 [i used to like istats menu too, but
even before they started charging for it, it has brought 2 of my systems
to its knees, where Menu Meters, since replacing istats, has not].
i am still running the free version of iStat Menus, and it has never
seemed heavyweight (though i run only the cpu and bandwidth menus)
however on your suggestion, and since i'm not planning to purchase
iStat, i tried MenuMeters; the network meter seems pretty solid, if not
pretty, and like iStat it reports total throughput in the menu, though i
miss the graph from iStat's menu; MenuMeters can only report network
values in bytes, whereas iStat has the option for bits (which is not my
preference, but is the unit of choice for ISPs, and i've had to discuss
those numbers a lot with them lately ...)
MenuMeters' cpu item, however, lacks iStat's depth; in particular i like
the report of the top 5 cpu processes; so for now i'll hold MenuMeters
in reserve
