I haven't seen this, but it sounds very similar to something else I saw. Try this: When it stops working, put your computer to sleep by the keyboard (ctrl-f2 to activate the menu, keyboard the apple menu, sleep). Let it sleep, and then wake it up. On my system, if I put my system into hibernate mode, on wake up the USB bus is not working properly; if I sleep and wake up, the USB bus is reset correctly. (Hibernate was not turned on by default; I had to manually turn it on with pmset.) Oddly, it only seems to affect the external mouse and keyboard on my system (but then, those are the only external USB devices I have). Hmm ... external ... does your keyboard work when your trackpad dies?
