I know I can run a MacBook or MacBookPro with an external monitor and the lid closed, but what is not clear to me is if I can continue to run it with the lid closed if I disconnect the external monitor.
I have an old MacBook with a broken screen (the hard drive is also dead). However, the machine boot perfectly fine off the DVD (in fact, I cannot get the DVD out despite various non-mechanical attempts), so I am planning on sticking a drive in it, booting it up closed, disconnecting the external monitor (and probably the keyboard and mouse) and using it as a spare server machine, and even occasionally using it with a screen attached just as an extra machine. I've also considered mounting it under a cabinet in the kitchen with a little LCD (if I can FIND one anymore) and streaming video to it. But before I decide exactly what to do with it, I have to know if disconnecting the external display will then turn on the internal display and heat up the machine. Also, is there a better way to provide power to the laptop than just permanently (or semi-permanently at least) leaving a mag-safe adapter on it? And, one last question, for the 13" MacBook (white plastic) I only need a 45W adapter, right? They all seem to be 60 or 85W now… -- She'd always tried to face towards the light.
