I'd say it really depends on how the previous machine was configured and used, 
and how the new machine is going to be configured and used.

Migration Assistant can be handy for moving over systemwide settings and 
applications, but the suite of apps you want on one machine might not be what 
you want on the new one, and settings such as (for example) Network locations 
you had on your mobile Macbook might not be applicable for your desktop iMac.

There's a lot to be said for starting fresh on a new machine (that's what I 
would do), but if you get frustrated with having to find/enter your serial 
numbers for software, or don't know what sorts of files are kept in 
~/Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Preferences, Migration Assistant 
makes it a no-brainer._______________________________________________
