No, this is incorrect. It is possible (and it was working) for mailto links to 
load a gmail page in the browser.

I’ve sent her a few links to see which fixes this. Thanks all for the pointers.

I have no idea. I like Mail.app, but she prefers the web face and has no 
interest in using a mail client anymore (she used Eudora under Windows for 
years before Gmail).
