They might be, depending on the account. There is no 'no longer' about it, 
however.

If you have a @mac.com account you can continue to use it. A @me.com email 
address will be created, but they will be the same account for you. You will 
receive email to either email address and can send from either, and use either 
to login.

But there are people out there for whom this is not the case.
