OK, the gigabit will not help you for any wifi, asnd everything but your mini 
is wifi, so you're not going to see an improvement with gigabit.

However, what I would do is use ethernet on the laptops to backup to time 
machine, and for that a gigabit switch WILL help.

You want 802.11n and you want it from a quality router, either an Apple base 
station or something at least high-end. I am using a NetGear WNDR3700 which is 
quite good.

You will want to have somewhere to place the router outside of the large metal 
box you'll be calling home (think of it as portable shielding) if you are going 
to be at a campground or anywhere you want to use your stuff outside.

2.4GHz has better penetration power than 5GHz, but is more crowded.
