Agreed that the new iWork (all three products) are awful and bungled badly.
I don't have a good alternative, but I've decided to give Apple one more
chance to get it right.

They left out critical features, but do plan on adding back many of them.

I am hoping that there will be usage improvements also. Or I'll be looking
for the recommendations you are seeking here.
