Hi,

I am looking forward to getting a new Mac Pro, which will require me to buy at
least one external disk array. I have been looking at a 2-disk thunderbolt
unit, which can be set up for either RAID 0 or RAID 1 (or JBOD). The vendor
says that thunderbolt does not allow other RAID levels.

My first question is whether this sounds true in general, or perhaps it's
specific to the hardware that this vendor is using.

Assuming that the above claim is true, my second question is the following.
What if I buy a pair of 2-disk thunderbolt units and set them up as RAID 1,
which should create a mirrored array on each. (Is this considered "hardware"
RAID?) Can I then use Apple's Disk Utility ("software" RAID?) to stripe the
mirrored pair and essentially create a RAID 1+0 (or RAID 10) array?

Or, similarly, can I instead set them up as RAID 0 and then mirror the striped
pair via Disk Utility to create the equivalent of a RAID 0+1 (or RAID 01) array?

If neither is possible, that's too bad. If only one is possible, perhaps I'll
try that, unless other recommend against it. If both are possible, which is
preferable?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Gregg
