To open "DavMail" you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.

I understand what the message is telling me, but I'm curious if anyone
knows why, and if there is a way around it. I'd rather not install Java
6 anything if I can help it.

Was it a message from DavMail? Or from the OS?

From the OS. I get the same message when trying to use Zipeg. Some other Java apps work fine with Oracle's Java 8 though.

I know Oracle recommends quite emphatically to move away from Java 6 because of bugs and security holes, but is the OS X version better maintained?
